The first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. state of New York during the pandemic was confirmed on March 1, 2020 and the state quickly became an epicenter of the pandemic, with a record 12,274 new cases reported on April 4 and approximately 29,000 more deaths reported for the month of April than the same month in 2019. By April 10, New York had more confirmed cases than any other country besides its own, but since then the outbreak has been mostly controlled in the state.
New York had the highest number of confirmed COVID cases of any state from the start of the U.S. outbreak until July 22, when it was first surpassed by California and later by Florida, Texas, and Illinois and now after being being ambushed and attacked worse than any other state in this country, the main thing currently being focused on are the mistakes in decisions made in nursing homes at the beginning of the virus which were mistakes due to conflicting information or the outright lies of the Trump administration who had been exacting political retribution against Governor Cuomo and the state of New York ever since January of 2017.
Listening to President Trump and some of his political allies, you might think that the lives of society’s most vulnerable members in this pandemic were less important than the economy – especially seniors.
While the president was in a rush to restart normal economic activity by Easter (against the advice of the nation’s top health experts), a prominent Republican – Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick – suggested that seniors are expendable in the face of economic turmoil. As he told FOX news:
“No one reached out to me and said, ‘As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that America loves for its children and grandchildren?’ And if that is the exchange, I’m all in.” – Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R-TX)
Lt. Gov. Patrick, a 69 year-old Tea Party favorite, presumes to speak for all seniors when he says that they would gladly sacrifice their lives so that younger people don’t have to suffer through a COVID-19 recession.
For starters, most older Americans most certainly would prefer to stay alive while the nation takes reasonable steps to contain COVID-19, understanding that public health is paramount even if the economy takes a temporary hit. Secondly, prematurely re-starting economic business as usual would endanger the economic and financial health of all Americans – regardless of age.
“Anybody who thinks we should prematurely end social distancing for the sake of the economy is fooling themselves. In the long run, the economy is going to be much better off if we end the pandemic — and the only way we can do that is by social distancing.” – Dan Adcock, Director of Government Relations and Policy, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
On Tuesday, President Trump seemed to pick-up on talk of sacrificing seniors for the greater economic good, posting a paradoxical tweet that pays lip service to protecting older Americans while pushing to re-start the economy as if it wouldn’t risk seniors’ health.
“Our people want to return to work… Seniors will be watched over protectively and lovingly. We can do two things together. THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM!” – President Trump’s tweet, 3/24/20
Fortunately, there has been considerable public pushback against both Lt. Gov Patrick’s comments and the president’s apparent hurry to re-start regular commerce within a couple of weeks, the consequences be damned.
“Patrick seems to envision a dynamic in which the economy returns to normal as some elderly Americans succumb to a deadly virus, effectively taking one for the team. But among the reasons that’s ridiculous is there can be no economic normalcy while a pandemic sweeps through the populace.” – Steve Benen, MSNBC columnist
Twitter lit up with objections to Trump’s and Patrick’s comments under the hashtag #NotDying4WallStreet:
I’m #NotDying4WallStreet and neither should you, your parents, or your grandparents.
People over 60 are providers, parents, grandparents, friends, colleagues, and spouses. They are human beings who are loved and add value.
I’m definitely #NotDyingForWallStreet, nor are my parents, in-laws, or 103 year old grandmother!
I vow to keep older Americans & those at higher risk safe by staying quarantined.
Mainstream media commentators (including CNN’s Gloria Borger) and state leaders (especially New York Governor Andrew Cuomo) have also condemned calls to restart business as usual too fast – and risking seniors’ lives to do so.
While it’s gratifying that many Americans reject Patrick’s and Trump’s pronouncements, there is a larger context here. No one really believes seniors will be pressured to forfeit their lives for the economy, but President Trump and his allies have frequently advocated policies that will cost seniors a considerable degree of their financial and health security – which ultimately can become life and death issues for the elderly.
The President championed a full payroll tax holiday in response to COVID-19, which would undermine Social Security – a program 64 million seniors and disabled Americans rely on. His budgets have called for billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid (which pays for impoverished seniors’ long-term care).
The administration and its allies in Congress have an intense desire to use senior’s programs to help pay for the added deficit created by the Trump/GOP tax cuts of 2017, which primarily benefitted the wealthy and big corporations. Even Meals on Wheels and home energy assistance for low-income seniors were on Trump’s chopping block.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has imposed work requirements and erected other barriers that are stripping low-income patients (including older Americans) of their Medicaid benefits. During annual open enrollment, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has actively undermined traditional Medicare, tilting consumer information toward privatized Medicare Advantage plans – which can cost seniors more in the long run and limit their choice of providers.
To advance their agenda, the “entitlement reformers” who have the president’s ear (despite his promises not to touch Social Security or Medicare), often employ the tactic of generational warfare to pit younger against older Americans. In truth, the interests of both generations are aligned, because today’s young people are tomorrow’s seniors – and will depend on their earned benefits in retirement more than ever. Besides, most children and grandchildren do not want to see their older loved ones’ benefits endangered.
The National Committee will continue to take every opportunity to remind the public how seniors – and the programs they paid for – stabilize our families, our communities, and, yes, our economy. Asking Americans to choose between the interests of seniors and younger people presents a false choice. Their well-being is deeply intertwined.
Older Americans and their families shouldn’t tolerate rhetoric or policies that threaten seniors’ health and security – or their value to our nation.
"His people are going to suffer and that's their problem."
Jared Kushner said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo 'didn't pound the phones hard enough to get PPE for his state. His people are going to suffer and that's their problem,' senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said, according to Vanity Fair.
In addition to his "free-market" comments that were jarring enough to spawn leaks from the March Situation Room meeting first reported by Vanity Fair, senior White House adviser Jared Kushner also had harsh words for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
"Cuomo didn't pound the phones hard enough to get PPE for his state....His people are going to suffer and that's their problem," Kushner said, according to Vanity Fair. Kushner was pushing back against those arguing for President Donald Trump to use the Defense Production Act to help get personal protective equipment to states.
States were outbidding each other and exacerbating the shortage, which persists today, particularly among nurses. At the time, Cuomo was taking to the airwaves with his daily press briefings to implore the federal government to stop the bidding wars.
"That's the CNN bulls---," Kushner said, according to Vanity Fair. "They lie."
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany denied the report in a statement to the magazine. "This story is another inaccurate and disgusting partisan hit job," she said. "President Trump has consistently put the health of all Americans first."
Subsequently, Cuomo's handling of nursing homes became a major focus, particularly among Republicans who felt the governor was getting a free pass from mainstream media outlets.
An Associated Press investigation found New York state's internal study of nursing-home deaths to be scientifically deficient, while others continued to take issue with Cuomo not providing clarity on an executive order that required nursing homes to accept recovered COVID-19 patients from hospitals.
And most recently, a comprehensive Wall Street Journal investigation into Cuomo's approach to the virus in the winter and early March found that he "delayed the shutdown of the nation's biggest city and slowed the reaction time as the virus spread in nursing homes, contributing to the nation's highest death toll."
FACT:
The reason there was a delayed shutdown of the nation's biggest city and a slow reaction to the virus spread in nursing homes was because decisions made were based on information provided by the administration of a homicidal psychopathic president with a personal vendetta against not only the governor of New York but the entire state of New York.
The politician who needs to be held responsible for the high death toll in New York is also the same politician who just got acquitted for inciting an insurrection against our government, regardless of the fact that the entire world knows that Donald J. Trump is guilty and continues to pose a threat to this country.
No one should be surprised at that verdict because there are almost 500,000 Americans dead from the virus and millions of lives have been permanently altered because of the virus which is a direct result of Donald J. Trump intentionally being the worst president in American history yet it seems that the only thing his evil enablers plan to do is give him an 'F' in the history books which is why they and all their evil need to be kindly escorted off our property.
The Trump administration went above and beyond to ensure that as many Americans died as possible under Donald Trump's presidency yet there are calls for Governor Cuomo's resignation or impeachment due to some of Donald Trump's victims who died under Governor Cuomo's watch being counted as dying in a hospital rather than being counted as dying in a nursing home.
2ND FACT:
New Yorkers who died in hospitals AND nursing homes died from COVID as a result of Donald Trump's lack of Humanity and depraved indifference toward human life and the death toll in New York would've been much higher if not for Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's empathy, sympathy, compassion, and leadership.
3RD FACT:
This is all an attempt to assassinate Governor Cuomo's reputation and character for no other reason than to change our opinions about him as a last resort to 'them' putting a stop to whatever he's doing that makes people believe that there are still honest politicians somewhere who actually give a damn.
The harder Governor Andrew Cuomo works to make this world a better place, the harder the psychopathic forces of evil will work to either destroy him for it or destroy our faith in him because of it.
With everything that the Trump administration did to New York prior to COVID, I will never stop believing that the pandemic wouldn't be nearly as bad in America had it started any place in America other than the state Donald Trump was already exacting revenge on for not showing loyalty to him at the polls.
Then when the virus hit, all the Trump administration saw was another opportunity for more retribution against New York as well as an opportunity to make Governor Cuomo look incompetent....which could only happen if they withheld the truth about the virus then refused to provide the life saving equipment needed to save as many lives as possible which is why this nursing home 'scandal' is nothing more than a set up that Governor Cuomo could not have avoided no matter what he did or said.
We have proof of Donald Trump's lies to America in regards to COVID yet there are forces of evil attempting to hold Governor Cuomo more responsible for incorrectly COUNTING the number of people from nursing homes who died in hospitals while the fact that people died as a result of Donald Trump either lying or withholding information apparently isn't being mentioned because you can't assassinate the character of an honest politician if you mention the one thing that proves your motives to be nothing more than a vindictive smear campaign.
Now that this war between Good & Evil has officially begun, I have this message for General Andrew M. Cuomo:
We know who you are.
We know why you're here.
We know why everyone in America knows your name.
We know what they are attempting to do to you.
We know why they're attempting to do it.
Know that they will not prevail.
Know that God is on your side.
Know that your army is larger than they could ever imagine.
I want to thank you for being that beacon of hope, light, truth, and humanity that so many of us were looking for when our reality stopped matching the lies of our so-called president.
By watching you, I learned more about how the world works and I also came into a deeper understanding of how interconnected we are as Humans.
I also think that we all learned how imperative it is for our leaders to have empathy and compassion and I'm not at all ashamed to say that because of watching you, I want to and will be a better person and I promise to do whatever I can to follow in your footsteps and help make this world a better place.
However........
I wouldn't be mad at ya if you dropped 'Governor' off the front of your name for a few minutes and handled some business wingtip style but I'll settle for a trip to the Reservoir of Rage and you ain't gotta get baptised or even stick a pinky toe in it....just wet your beak a little bit and if that happens to cause an involunary reflex which might result in a wingtip or two gettin' stuck in some asses, I got a good feeling that God is gonna forgive you because they deserve it and you've earned it.
